step 1 - project mission

One of the most interesting and challenging aspects of a project is assisting clients in developing a solid business model, a functional program and a written narrative that create a framework from which we can hang the design on. Understanding the creative and budgetary parameters and getting everyone on the same page helps move things quickly and effectively forward in design. I like to say, you can't think outside of the box, until you define it.

step 2 - concept development

This is one of the most popular steps of a project that involves pretty concept sketches, colorful illustrations, flowerly writing, cool plan diagrams, sexy massing models and, well, program analysis. All of these pieces are great and they help to allow the team to share and vet ideas, expose challenges, and find solutions. It's easy to be seduced by pretty pictures, so the key here is to keep an eye on the main goal so that the time here is used as wisely and efficiently as possible and that all work responds to a specific 'need'. Design is about communication, and it's the careful choice of drawings or sketches that explain more than pure quantity.

step 3 - Design development

Now it's time to get serious. In this step everyone has a good general sense of the space, the design, how things will work, a preliminary idea of the cost estimate and maybe an intial plan for production. These phases (Schematic and Design Development) begin to drill down on the concept and design. Using detailed drawings, 3D models, sections, elevations, illustrations, programs and technical narratives, everyone gains an even better understanding of the project, and it's challenges. This phase is where hard questions are asked and answered and tough decisions are made. And for good reason. This is when spending kicks into high gear. Wasting time here, is indeed, wasting valuable budget.

step 4 - production

While stressful at times, these final steps of construction documentation, production, fabrication and installation are some of the most exciting as well. This is where critical decisions are made that may affect the cohesiveness or brand-defining aspects of the project, and maybe even the success as well. But not to worry. If the design process has been completed well enough, these things will be more minor and less of an issue to handle. This is an exciting phase where everyone begins to see things come together and take shape.
